My Little Moment

Dim room. The only light was coming from the antique lampstand. Richelle was positioned on the piano. Then...

One...two...three!

Happy Birthday to you...

My heart melted. At that instant, tears began crowding my eyes. And as some familiar people walked into the spacious living room from behind a huge cardboard, my tears started flowing nonstop - I was being surrounded by my Tahilan family, each of them holding a lit candle for me to blow.

I am turning 18 in two days, I remembered.

One by one, people came out in a single file, whispering Happy 18th Birthday to my ears. They wore the biggest and brightest smiles that I've ever seen while I was too dumbfounded and tongue-tied and disoriented and stirred. But what prompted my tears the most was seeing my family - all seven of them - coming out from behind the board. They were wearing outfits which they only normally wear on special occasions, and they too, clutched white candles for me to blow.

I wasn't expecting them to set foot on Tahilan, most especially my Dad and my brothers who seem allergic upon hearing that I go there regularly for my confession and recollection. And I wasn't even expecting a bash as surprising and as special as that knowing that I won't be having anything on my birthday, due to financial matters.

It was really overwhelming to receive such attention because I only see those and-there-was-light-plots on tv. I should say that the people behind it (Mari, I know you played the BIGGEST ROLE) acted so professionally that I didn't even notice they were up to something. I was VICTIM-ed. Haha. But it was great!

After that "grand entrance", they made me sit on a special chair in the center front/front center of the room. Either way, it was facing a mini-stage with the huge innocent cardboard as their backdrop. Carly emceed the hilarious get-together which included a comical dramatization of my recent exploration: synchronized swimming. With teeming creativity and guts, Doojie and Kim did a synchronized sequence to the tune of Blue Danube Waltz, with a wavy white blanket used as the pool water. It was perfect for a Broadway presentation! Complete with goggles and improvised nose clips, they sent the audience chuckling nonstop. I cried even more.

There was also a song rendition from Mitzie, complete with four back-up singers (all members of the Tahilan staff). Then came my sister Lolit, who was supposed to sing a duet with MaiMai, and she sang our favorite Broadway song Nothing. It was so sweet, I was again touched, therefore, that meant more tissue for me.

Adding a cultural touch to their presentation, an eight-membered team played Angklung instruments, with Richelle conducting in front. Amazing.

And to complete the birthday surprise, they gave me a homemade card (modelled like a micro swimming pool, complete with fake water, tiles, and salbabida) where 18 beautiful things about me were written in strips of paper. Some of which included:

effective speaker: inspired many girls in the mini-conference

and

long lost twin of Heart Evangelista

What compliments! They make me blush...

Anyway, THANK YOU TAHILAN FOR LOVING ME. And of course, thank you mom, dad, mari, bokyo, barok, lolit, and maimai for this pre-birthday surprise. You all deserve some online recognition.

Haaayy...sana palaging bertday.=)
